This is Liz Williams, the designer/ founder of Coat Check Chicago! I started this business in 2014 after becoming frustrated by the lack of quality garments available on the market.
As a graduate of Parson's School of Design I've always been interested in clothing as a form of expression.
However, my skills as a pattern maker and seamstress were forged while creating costumes some of Chicago's most iconic theatres.
It was during my years as a seamstress that I learned, among other things...
Some of the most beautiful and well-made clothes were constructed decades ago when quality was valued.
Modern garment workers are being extremely undervalued and under-paid.
As a result of a broken fashion system, modern customers were ultimately losing out by having to continually purchase poorly made goods season after season.
With all this in mind I set out to create something better...modern women's outerwear that could be cherished for years to come, not only because of its timeless style but also because of its quality craftsmanship. Since day one, I've pledged to have my pieces ethically-made right here in the City of Chicago.
My coats and jackets have been tried and tested in a city known for its bad weather. Their functionality is just as important to me as their looks.
It's no accident that I am drawn to outerwear as a means of expressing my values. My only hope is that others may take notice and share in them too.
This Fall 2021, I am thrilled to partner with American Woolen, one of the few remaining wool mills in the United States to bring you a few new pieces in a lovely, USA-Made, wool/ cashmere blend. It has long been a goal of mine to be able to work with an American mill so that I could provide better transparency into my own supply chain, reduce greenhouse gases, and engage with USA manufacturing efforts.
As I begin to make this switch, many of my fabrics will continue to come from mills in Korea, Japan and Italy. All of my fabric selections keep their end use in mind. While I enjoy the natural and sustainable properties of natural fibers, in some cases, I use synthetic fibers (mostly blends of Cotton and Wool with Nylon) to provide for better durability and in some cases water - repellency, thus giving them superior functionality. I take great pride in bringing you quality construction and this same pride extends to my fabric selections.
Another continued goal of mine, is to bring more inclusive sizing to this brand. In 2020, I launched a plus size extension to many of my best-selling styles. In 2021, I continue to work to bring petite options to the table as well. While it is difficult for me (a small, independent, designer) to carry every size and color in stock, I do offer many pre-order opportunities so that most styles can be offered in the style, size, and color of your choosing. I continue to offer free shipping on both returns and exchanges, so that in the case that the fit is still not right for you, a return should be easy for you to make.
